ATLANTA, GA. May 5, 2022 – The Ikouii Creative is excited to release its 2nd book, titled: INSIDE THEIR STUDIO: Deaf & Disabled Artists Reshaping the Arts. The book is the second installment of Ikouii’s ongoing book project that highlights outstanding artists living with disabilities. The book is now available for pre-order and will be printed in June.

The organization’s first book, titled: INSIDE THEIR STUDIO: Artists with Disabilities and Their Collaborators featured 30 artists from 10 different countries with 17 disabilities represented. The publication provided a rare glimpse into the artists’ studio practices, inspirations, and personal journeys. Since its release in 2020, the book has been sold worldwide in 13 countries. It is included in collections and used as required reading of universities, libraries, galleries, and museums across the United States, including RIT/Rochester Institute of Technology and Gallaudet University. Recently, the book was acquired by MoMA/The Museum of Modern Art as part of the participatory space featured within their current exhibition, Matisse: The Red Studio in New York.

We expect this second book to be nothing short of excellence from its predecessor. Outstanding artists with various disabilities from the BiPOC, LGBTQIA, and Neurodivergent communities are featured in this edition. The works on view may be described as poetic, profound, beautiful, and visionary. Drawn from the artists collections, the works not only demystifies, but also poeticizes the profound contributions that artists living with disabilities share. These artists experience enriching journeys and they are invaluable assets as artists, art professionals, patrons, and facilitators. Featured artists have explored varied themes, working in movement, sculpture, painting, poetry, photography, and installation arts. The book reaffirms that these artists, like many that go unmentioned, deserve a rightful place in the larger global art landscape and deserve greater access.
